The Yards and The Bees

High up on the rooftops at The Yards, above the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden, is another city that’s buzzing with life – our very own collection of beehives!

This summer, we’re partnering with charity Bee Friendly Trust to raise awareness of the importance of protecting these hard-working pollinators. Visit their donation page to see what you can do to help pollinator populations near you.

To celebrate our own urban bees, we’ve teamed up with four artists to create a series of bold installations that are dotted around The Yards for you to discover.

Find out a little more about the installations and their creators below…

‘Wildflowers’ by Charlie Davis

London based illustrator Charlie Davis has taken inspiration from the wildflowers that bees pollinate for his colourful mural. Featuring a vibrant floral design, it captures the summery vibe of an urban bee’s habitat and at 50ft tall, it’s an impressive sight.

Visit ‘Wildflowers’ in Mercer Walk at The Yards.

‘Urban Ecosystem’ by Abbey Lossing

Illustrator and animator Abbey Lossing has created a bright, bold beehive which depicts the urban ecosystem from the depths of the London Underground to the skies above the city.

The piece aims to highlight the integral role that bees play in this ecosystem. Listen carefully to this one… you might even get a buzzy surprise!

You’ll find ‘Urban Ecosystem’ in Mercer Walk at The Yards.

‘Bees in the City’ by Helen Musselwhite

Paper-based artist and model maker Helen Musselwhite has taken one of her signature layered paper artworks and transformed it into a wooden painted scene.

Featuring plants, flowers and bees that are larger than life, it’s inspired by our very own urban bees thriving on the rooftops of The Yards.

‘Bees in the City’ is located in St. Martin’s Courtyard at The Yards.

‘A Hive for Tomorrow’ by Thomas Burden

Illustration, animation and design specialist Thomas Burden has created a vibrant and playful visual installation.

It imagines what the intricate inner workings of a busy beehive could look like. Get close enough to this artwork to trigger the motion sensor and you’ll start up the honey production line!

Experience it yourself, at the Mercer Street entrance to The Yards.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information on a series of bee-inspired workshops, coming to The Yards later this summer. All proceeds will go towards Bee Friendly Trust.
